Instagram Influencer Dr. Joyce Kahng shares why you need digital media at your practice #IE40Under40

Virtual Smile Consults. Practice insight. Answers to burning questions (“Is dental school worth it? Do you need to use mouthrinse? How often should crowns be replaced?”) Even daily skin care routines.

Dr. Joyce Kahng @joycethedentist, one of Incisal Edge‘s 2019 40 Under 40 honorees, offers all of these and more via the Instagram platform to share her dental philosophy and propel her career into the digisphere.

As a digital platform, Instagram launched on Oct. 6. 2010, and garners over 100 million photos a day. Two-hundred million users visit at least one business profile daily, making the app a wise marketing strategy for businesses in all industries.

Dr. Kahng’s profile, which to date features an impressive following of over 18,700, with a mere 177 posts, presents the 33-year-old as a modern, progressive dental professional. See one recent post below:

Let's talk about one of the most unpopular topics in Dentistry… XRAYS. I practice in Southern California…land of Avocado Toast and Acai Bowls. My patients care tremendously about their overall health and wellness and I love that about them. But the one area of contention is always their check up xrays. And i've noticed, there is an increasing amount of fear surrounding dental X-ray exposure. Just for the record: A set of check up xrays is about 0.005 mSv, the same amount of radiation you would get from a 1-2 hr airplane flight or 1 day of background radiation. We are always exposed to radiation. Just by living. Just by breathing. And thanks to technology, our digital dental X-rays are very low impact. However, given the facts, I find many patients still unconvinced… they threaten to leave the practice and find a dentist who doesn’t take xrays. Although that #sucks, it is the patient's prerogative to choose a dentist they align with. If that is one who does not practice at the standard of care, then we are not aligned because: I run an ethically based practice. I don't over-treatment plan or upsell. I follow ADA guidelines and I practice lawfully. I guard and protect my patient's best interests. I’m not in the business of overexposing anyone to radiation. And deep down inside I feel like my patients know that. Yet for the same reasons they choose me to be their dentist, they are also quick to leave when they don't get what they want. I quickly go from advocate to enemy. As a practice owner, the x-ray battle is one that I lose over and over. And of course I want my patients to be happy and satisfied —I’m a business owner. But sometimes it’s not about business. When business meets medicine, hard decisions need to be made. There are times you have to stand your ground and uphold a standard a patient may not appreciate in the moment. It may not be good business but it's the way I run my business.

Many of Dr. Joyce Kahng’s Instagram posts offer evidence based information in fun, easy to understand ways for the general publicly.

In the post above, Dr. Kahng addresses patient concerns about x-rays and radiation. She writes in a conversational tone that can appeal to both her patients and even dental colleagues.

With clear, high quality photos, she leads an average of 5,000 people to her profile weekly, where she shares her persona, dental insights and love for helping others.

“I love being able to work with my hands. It makes the time just fly by when I get in the zone. It’s also incredibly powerful, being able to help a patient build confidence in their smile. It totally changes the way they present in the world both at work and in their personal lives.”

Behind the scenes with this ‘OC Dentist’

The “OC Dentist” brings this enthusiasm with her, from her office Orange + Magnolia Dental Studio in Costa Mesa, California, and presents it with professional portraits, narrative captions and stories on her Instagram profile.

The stories she features in her highlight reel, those little bubbles at the top of an Instagram feed, include daily updates about herself, her studio and dentistry.

A recent story shows a video of her brown puppy curled up on the floor sleeping; the pup naps as Dr. Kahng sweats it out on a Peloton. Text in the story: “with my favorite pupperooooo” and “Just finished a holiday ride!”

Another story shows her father outside cooking on a grill. She admired her father as she filmed. Text in the video: “My dad has fully committed to a whole head of white hair. This is my destiny,” Dr. Kahng whispers behind the camera, “Looks good dad, looks good.”

The stories mentioned above are consistent across most Instagram accounts; random snippets of the account holder’s daily life. But this doctor also takes planned, strategic approaches to her stories that spread brand awareness and inform patients about her profession.

A feature on her profile, #dentaltalk, is a series of videos where Dr. Kahng discusses topics that patients care about, such as whether a dentist should drill or not drill a tooth where there is a suspected cavity.

“This is a really tricky situation because as dentists, we’re trying to stay conservative and we want to be responsible and definitely not drill everything that we see,” Dr. Kahng said in a post, as arrows fly and attach to her photo and dissolve leaving behind red kisses; it’s one of many face filters found on the app.

“It’s a hard conversation to have with patients because patients want to know 100 percent there’s a cavity inside there. At a certain point, we’re basically saying you have to put your trust in us,” she explained.

‘Change the way patients see the dentist’

She admits that social media is an essential marketing tool for dentists.

“My whole presence on social media is built around being able to change the way patients see the dentist. If there are that many people on social media, especially young people, we as dentists have to go where the people are!”  

Dr. Joyce Kahng explains social media as a necessity.

Depending on the business type, some organizations will use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn or all platforms to market themselves and their product or service. For Dr. Kahng, a rising social influencer, Instagram is the most useful platform for her purposes.

“I love Instagram because it is a perfect medium to build relationships. There are just so many fun ways to use it and I love how the stories keep me connected to patients as well! They can see some of the behind-the-scenes of what my life as a dentist really is like.”

How does Dr. Kahng attract 70% of her new patient base?

The doctor says that social media is essential for her practice’s growth, “It drives patients to my practice.” She estimates that 70 percent of her new patient base is because of her social media presence.

“This also includes the new word of mouth, where many of my patients will share my Instagram with a friend of theirs. It’s the modern Business card!”

With such a large Instagram following, at 18.7K, many of her colleagues and friends ask how she built her social media presence. So many, that she decided to write it all down, a decision that would later lead her to becoming a published author.

Creating a step-by-step guide to Instagram marketing

Repetitive inquisition led Dr. Kahng to write Instagram Marketing for the Modern Dentist (2019), a step-by-step guide to cultivate and grow Instagram accounts.

“The more we can be on Instagram, the more we can change the face of dentistry together. I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback about it from dentists who have said I really helped give them guidance and motivation to put themselves out there. Putting yourself out there is one of the scariest things as a Doctor and there is a lot of fear around it.”

An impressive repertoire of education and experience

A graduate of the University of the Pacific, Dr. Kahng has a bachelor of science degree in biology. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. She completed her general practice residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Jacobi Medical Center, in 2011.

Shortly after opening Orange + Magnolia Dental Studio in 2014, Dr. Kahng became a licensed real estate agent serving the Orange County area in California.

At the University of Southern California, she dedicates her efforts as an assistant clinical professor for the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry’s restorative sciences department, where she works with aspiring dental professionals to develop their hand skills on mannequins.

‘Control your own narrative’

Most recently, Dr. Kahng has focused her efforts in the digital realm on Instagram. She suggests that all dental professionals adopt a social media marketing plan and take advantage of this dynamic marketing tool.

“It is absolutely essential for dentists to build a brand and market themselves on social media. Social proof is one of the most impactful ways of marketing and doctors need to realize that they cannot let others control their narrative. Take back control of your own narrative.”

Dr. Nicholas A. Lavoie takes dentistry to the '212th degree' #IE40Under40

When fresh out of high school or college, some people know which career paths to follow. After settling in, some discover a calling to positively impact people in the community that pulls them off course.

That describes the path of Dr. Nicholas A. Lavoie, who shifted careers to become a board-certified pediatric dentist. Today he offers oral health care at his new practice, Lavoie Pediatric Dentistry, in Swansea, Massachusetts.

He started his health care journey in the nursing profession.

My experiences as a nurse opened my eyes to the extent to which early childhood caries, the most common chronic disease in children, exists, and how severely it can impact overall health and emotional well-being. My heart was broken for these kids and I wanted to be able to address oral disease more directly, but my influence as a nurse was limited to referrals and preventive education. I decided to go back to school to become a dentist.

Helping children overcome and prevent cavities, a disease that affects 1 out of 5 children aged 5 to 11 years old, is a calling that the Incisal Edge 40 Under 40 honoree has dedicated his life to achieving. And so, he left nursing to help children who may not know about the consequences of dental neglect.

He believes in his mission so much that he built a new office that opened in August to better help and educate about the importance of oral health. Dr. Lavoie and his team are committed to providing an experience beyond the typical dental experience.

Our office culture places a significant emphasis on the fact that every patient is a VIP and an extended member of our dental family. We enjoy connecting on a personal level with each child who walks through the door, as well as their siblings, parents, or whoever else may accompany them. While most offices do make efforts in these areas, we attempt to reach the ‘212th degree.’

The new office features five operatories with room to expand to 10 as his dentistry grows. It’s designed to enhance patient comfort using the latest technology and old fashion hospitality.

Dr. Lavoie uses electronic record-keeping, an environmentally sustainable alternative to paper, as well as the latest digital radiology equipment. While patients wait in the lounge, he provides them with tablets, HDTVs and coffee. It’s a welcoming atmosphere, especially for his patients’ parents.

During the construction process, especially as the opening deadline approached, he experienced sleepless nights, but also the euphoria of building a new practice and helping children.

Every child he meets is a meaningful encounter, Dr. Lavoie said, and a way for him “…to guide them through a difficult experience and to be able to get them smiling before they leave, or possibly even excited to come back, is an incredibly good feeling,” .

Like all professions, aspects challenge the ability to work efficiently, and dentistry is no exception.

Navigating the mess of dental insurance is, in my opinion, the largest difficulty. There are so many dental insurance companies that exist, each with their own set of rules in regard to range and frequency of treatments. It makes it incredibly confusing for both patients and dental staff, and phone calls to resolve any confusion can easily run upward of 30 minutes, which impacts the time and resources that can be focused on quality patient care.

Outside the Dental Practice

Outside the office, Dr. Lavoie classifies spending time with family as the most important aspect of his life. He’s an animal lover and foodie, who rarely frequents the same restaurants.

He enjoys discovering new, culturally authentic cuisine, especially ones that induce sweat and ignite his taste buds. He enjoys watching football and, of course, as a New Englander, his favorite team is the New England Patriots, a team that has won six Super Bowls since 2002.

Dr. Lavoie, his dental team and new office are ready to help children form healthy dental habits through regular visits and self-care for years to come.

We strive every day to re-define the negative stigma that generally follows dentistry and create a generation of self-empowered individuals when it comes to oral health.

From East to West: Dr. Tori Thuy-Conrad exemplifies determination #IE40Under40

What would you do to protect your family in a country plagued by war, poverty, labor camps and the very real possibility of execution? Would you escape?

That’s what Dr. Tori Thuy-Conrad’s parents did to flee post-war Vietnam, although it wasn’t as easy as hopping on a plane. In fact, the government declared leaving the country illegal.

“We were so poor, and living in that state of poverty was no way to live. We didn’t have much food. My parents’ jobs didn’t provide for a hopeful future for our family.”

Dr. Tori Thuy-Conrad said, recalling the stories her parents told of Vietnam.

The only way many Vietnamese people could escape communist oppression was by boat, a risky attempt some refugees did not survive. Those who were brave enough to flee, an estimated 1.5 million of them from 1975 to 1995, were known as “Boat People.”

In 1980, when Dr. Conrad was just six weeks old, she and her family boarded her father’s fishing boat, a vessel not designed for the open ocean, and were joined by seven other siblings and cousins.

They sailed into the South China Sea from Hue City, not knowing where, when and if they would make landfall. They sailed for days, weeks, over a month, not knowing where the tides would take them.

“We spent over 38 days at sea without a definitive destination. We arrived at a refugee camp in Hong Kong, where we resided for months until we were brought to a brighter future by the sponsorship of a United States family.”

Dr. Conrad ended up in Denver, Colorado, a stark difference from the tropical climate of central Vietnam, and began to live an American life.

Finding her dentistry destiny

Dr. Conrad attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry, but the atomic mass of atoms was not all she found. She also met her husband there, and a burning desire to help people.

“I’ve always known I wanted to be in the health care field, helping others heal through medicine, especially children.”

After graduation from Coe, she moved to Minneapolis to study dental hygiene at the University of Minnesota, but she wanted more, and continued her education to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.

Today, the 2019 Incisal Edge 40 Under 40 honoree owns and practices at Tweet Pediatric Dentistry in Chanhassen, Minnesota, and is a mom of three. She juggles the responsibilities of a full-time dentist and a mother, an act that has its challenges.

“I think the most challenging aspects of dentistry is not the dentistry, it’s running a business. I had to learn as I went along and made a lot of mistakes. My mentors have guided me along the way.”

Although it’s difficult to run a business, Dr. Conrad loves her patients. She believes she makes a difference in their lives, and they return the favor to her.

“I am so grateful I get to do this and make such a difference in these children’s lives. The high-fives and hugs that I’m left with when my little patients leave their appointments leave me beaming with happiness.”

When not in her operatory, Dr. Conrad is in the kitchen experimenting. She loves to cook for her family — and with them. Her favorite cuisine is Italian, without the pasta. She likes to stray from her cookbooks and allow her creativity to take over.

“I love using the fresh herbs and flavors, and pairing them with more proteins and vegetables in place of pasta. I try to create dishes without a recipe. I find it most rewarding when I have someone who eats my creation and provides raving remarks on a recipe that does not exist. It’s the best compliment.”

Dr. Conrad’s dreams never end. She wants to improve her culinary skills and one day compete on the Food Network show Chopped, a challenging competition where three chefs battle for supremacy. She also wishes to pilot a plane.

With many years of dentistry behind her, she has advice for those who dream to be who she is—a successful, practicing dentist.

“Utilize all resources and mentors out there. There are so many people willing to lend advice, reach out often and be willing to extend the same as you gain experience and knowledge. I give many thanks to my mentors for helping me reach my dreams, but also to alleviate and get me through the challenges I face.”

If anyone doubts their dreams, they need to speak with Dr. Conrad, whose tenacity and motivation is the stuff of inspiration.

Dr. Lavasani Shares Her Dentistry Philosophy

Dr. Setareh Lavasani has been dubbed the “Queen of Radiology” and “The Selfie Queen,” by her students and colleagues. Events in her life, though, were not always ones to smile about.

The 2019 Incisal Edge 40 Under 40 honoree recently spoke with TheDailyFloss.com about her early career and the battle she raged with life-threatening illnesses in her 20s. The selfie-slinging (shown above, at far left), chihuahua-loving board-certified radiologist discussed how she persevered to become the professional she is today.

The Pomona, California Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist comes from a long line of dentists; as she says, “[It] runs in my family.” Her sister is an endodontist, her cousins and aunt, dentists. Dr. Lavasani jokes, “We have a mini dental convention of our own when we get together!”

Originally from Iran, she attended Ajman University of Science and Technology, earning her a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Her education did not stop there.

Dr. Lavasani moved to San Antonio, Texas to attend a radiology residency program at the University of Texas Health Science Center. There she would be given the most critical test of her life to date. She was diagnosed with breast cancer as soon as she received her admission to the radiology residency, a disease that affects 3.5 million people every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. This caused an interruption in her studies, but she did not give up.

After her treatments, Dr. Lavasani returned to her studies in San Antonio. Within a year, she was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia, a progressive and rare illness. Leukemias are cancers that start in cells, typically in bone marrow, and then quickly spread to other parts of the body, according to the American Cancer Society.

Thanks to the generosity of a donor, Dr. Lavasani received a life-saving bone marrow transplant, beating the 4 out of 5 mortality rate, and giving her a second chance at attaining her dreams. She had battled — and won — a fight for her life on two occasions.

Earlier this year, Dr. Setareh Lavasani celebrated her 10th cancer-free year.

“I learned to never lose hope and always try to look on the bright side, even when there is barely a single ray of light,” she said.

Determined not to let her health lower her spirits, Dr. Lavasani continued her radiology studies in San Antonio and graduated with a certificate in Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology and a Master’s in Dental Diagnostic Sciences. 

“I saw firsthand that the generous donation of a bone marrow saved my life, so I promised myself to focus on this cause (dentistry) and hopefully make a difference. I learned that this is what real life is about! I also realized that our time is so short, so I try to say more ‘thank yous’ and more ‘I love yous’ to people who matter to me and have shown me unconditional support all along.”

Dr. Lavasani received most of her support from her parents, family members and close friends who inspired her during treatment in school and throughout her career. Her mother was a star role model who raised two kids, earned a Ph.D. and became a well-known editor-in-chief in Iran.

Today, Dr. Lavasani is an associate professor and the Director of Oral Radiology & Advanced Imaging at Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Dental Medicine in Pomona, California.

Often, she travels for speaking engagements. Dr. Lavasani is an internationally recognized lecturer. She frequently speaks at California Dental Association (CDA), UCLA School of Dentistry Advanced Education in General Dentistry program and the American and International Academies of Oral Radiology. She is a fellow and speaker for the southern California Oral Pathology Society and the Global Dental Implant Academy (FGDIA).

Though amid her prestigious positions, she takes particular pride in her role as the “The Selfie Queen.” She smiles for her past, present and future. Now, she takes the philosophy gained through her experiences and expresses it with every student she meets.

“I find that I’m happiest when I’m teaching and sharing ideas with students and fellow colleagues. So, inside and outside of school, I try to focus and grow.”

Dr. Lavasani is at a pinnacle of her career, ascending from the uncertainty of disease she fought. She teaches and encourages future dentists while following and sharing her virtue:

“Give back in any way you can and as small or large as you can. I think each of us, in one way or another, have a cause that is close to our hearts for any personal reason. I think giving in any way that is possible makes a huge difference in our sense of happiness and fulfillment.”

Dr. Yuliya Salmeron on how struggles lead to success #IE40Under40

Dr. Yuliya Salmeron, DMD, has been recognized as one of America’s Best Young Dentists, the 2019 Incisal Edge 40 Under 40 honorees.

This accomplishment, along with many other great feats, such as graduating from the top of her class at Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine (while also waiting tables at her local diner) and starting a new dental practice, Edge Endodontics in Austin, Texas, makes it clear that Dr. Salmeron is equipped with a ferocious and undying drive to succeed.

Just as everyone faces difficult times, Dr. Salermon had struggles of her own to overcome while trying to pave the path for a career in dentistry.

Dr. Yuliya looked her troubles straight in the eye and came barreling at them, determined to overcome all of the odds pinned against her.

This determination and endless perseverance is the reason Dr. Yuliya Salmeron is where she is today.

Hardships growing up

Coming to the United States from Russia as a child, Dr. Yuliya had a bit more to work through than the average child.

The key to her success? Constantly staying positive. Her good attitude is responsible for all that she has and will continue to accomplish.

“I was hungry for a better life. My family was still in Russia, and I wanted to help them tremendously. Honestly, I had no time to be negative.”

This survival instinct sparked a fire in Dr. Salmeron, and she knew that she would stop at nothing to bring her family the life they deserve.

Despite this unwavering determination, Dr. Salmeron still admits that there were a few moments of fear and stress that made her question the achievability of her goals.

“The fear of failure came over me several times when I was going through college in my twenties; it caused a lot of stress.”

Overcoming the struggles

By remembering all that she had on the line – both in her family life and professional life – Dr. Salmeron learned to overcome the stress and not let it bother her, no matter how intense things seemed to get.

“Without the safety net of my parents to back me up, I stopped doubting myself and realized that the only way I could go was forward.”

Soaking up the family time

Today, Dr. Salmeron soaks up every minute of family time she is blessed with.

“One of the best parts about my family life is being with my boys and watching them grow. They are incredibly smart, and sometimes the best memories are made doing something as simple as watching cartoons with them,” Dr. Salmeron said.

Prioritizing her practice

Apart from her family life, Dr. Salmeron also enjoys making memories in her professional career.  She aims to make a difference in her patients’ lives every day.

“As an endodontist, I try to save my patients’ natural teeth, so seeing them right away is critical when they are in pain.  I aim to create a relaxing, almost spa-like experience when I perform procedures that alleviate any discomfort they might be having.”

Future Plans for her Practice

In the future, Dr. Salmeron plans to continue building upon her professional successes. Since her practice, Edge Endodontics, has only been up and running for a little over eight months, Dr. Salmeron recognizes that there’s still a lot of work to do.

“My goals include things like providing infinite support to my fellow dentists, as well as offering immediate appointments for emergency cases to relieve my patients’ pain,” Dr. Salmeron said.

Juggling it all

With running a new practice comes its own difficulties. Dr. Salmeron recognizes that there are still some roadblocks ahead, especially as a single parent in the field of dentistry.

“Juggling motherhood, personal relationships and my professional career is sometimes exhausting and very challenging,” Dr. Salmeron said. “Most people say it’s important to find a balance, but I don’t think there is one.”

Dr. Salmeron realizes that it’s impossible to do all things well. Some days are more centered around her practice and other days around her kids. In the end, she has to remind herself of the sacrifices she’s making to ensure her kids have a good, solid future ahead of them.

Her advice to other doctors

In the end, Dr. Salmeron urges all others in similar situations to remind themselves that working hard doesn’t make you a bad mother, partner, friend, or anything along the lines.

Dr. Salmeron is looking forward to the challenges her future career will hold. The bigger the challenge, the better-suited doctor she will become.

Dr. Janice Doan to lead third location of A+Family Dentistry #IE40Under40

It all comes back to family

An alum of the Incisal Edge’s 2015 40 Under 40, Dr. Janice Doan never rests on her laurels – she continues demonstrate her hard working and ambition every day.

In recent years, Dr. Doan has made several advancements in her professional life as well as in her family’s practice, A+ Family Dentistry. These depict how dedication to career can result in endless opportunities for connection and empowerment.

Yesterday, A+ Family Dentistry announced that in addition to their locations in Poway and El Cajon, they are opening a third office in Sorrento Valley in mid-August. Founded by Dr. Justene Doan and Dr. Roger Tran in 2002, this family owned dentistry has been providing affordable dental care service to the San Diego community for over 17 years.


“With the two offices that are already established in different areas, the Sorrento Valley location will be managed by my sister Dr. Janice Doan to provide comprehensive dental care at affordable costs for those residing between Poway and San Diego.”

The further she advances in her dental career, the more Dr. Doan is recognized for her wisdom and abundance of knowledge.

A community activist, Dr. Janice Doan has also been volunteering and participating in various programs in the community including one called Give Back a Smile or GBAS. This program was established to connect eligible survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence who’ve received dental injuries from the abuse with volunteer cosmetic dentists throughout the United States and Canada.


“This year, the program I have volunteered for is to provide dental care to a domestic violence survivor who suffers from teeth injuries. The patient that I am working with suffered a life-altering situation that affects her smile and her well-being. As it is something that everyone sees and is such a major physical attribute, a smile can affect every aspect of life.”

“At A+ Family dentistry, we make it a point to let patients know that we’re here to help. Not only the dentists and the office want to help, but the businesses that support our dental office as well. One of our labs was also able to contribute the parts and ceramics imperative for this patient’s well-being, free of charge. Thanks to the GBAS program, she can now live her life as she was meant to, happily and with a gorgeous smile.”

Action to Win

Dr. Janice Doan has been sharing advice on topics such as freedom in the workplace and the empowerment of women in dentistry across several different platforms.

On August 9 and 10, Dr. Doan will be speaking at the “Action to Win” event at the Catamaran Resort in San Diego, California. The event unites dentists from all over the world to discuss how to create profitable, impactful and enjoyable businesses.

The Dentist Freedom Blueprint

Dr. Doan was also able to share her wisdom when she featured as a guest on Dr. David Phelps’ podcast, “The Dentist Freedom Blueprint”.

“The ultimate goal is freedom physically, financially, and spiritually, and what that means for each person. For me, it is being able to prioritize and be willing to sacrifice some things for others so that I can reach my goals,” Dr. Doan said.

Dr. Doan reflects on what she was doing well in her professional career and figures out how to duplicate her areas of success. Ultimately, Dr. Doan aims to create systems that work well and are simple enough for everyone to adopt.

Family life: Leading by example

Dr. Doan also showcased how her professional life relates to her family life. In regard to her five-year-old son, Jake, Dr. Doan said she often teaches him the how to handle the basics of life through leading by example.

She enjoys watching her son pick up on these behaviors and eventually implement them.

“For example, I went to the gym for my workout. Jake came with me and wanted to do what I was doing. He and I had a great training session at the gym with my trainer,” Dr. Doan said.

Dr. Doan loves watching her son adapt and pick up on the positive habits she sets forth for him. Family has and continues to be a staple in Dr. Doan’s life.

Gaining strength through strife

Family holds such a special place in Dr. Doan’s heart mostly because of the hardships she and her family first encountered when they arrived in the United States from Vietnam.

As a child, Dr. Doan grew up with her brother and sister, all of who were raised by their grandparents. Absent from their early childhood lives were their parents, who were raising their youngest brother in a different city.

Dr. Doan said growing up without her parents around was difficult, but she knew what they were sacrificing to ensure that she and her siblings would have plentiful, successful lives. Dr. Doan explains what occurred when they reunited.

“When we finally reunited for good, it was awesome, but also very difficult. We had all grown so much that rekindling that relationship again was difficult,” Dr. Doan said.

What made everything fall back into place though was the solid foundation of love her parents put in place.

“Having such a strong foundation of love really helped us through everything. Being able to build on that foundation even more made it all worth it,” Dr. Doan said.

Getting started in dentistry

Her family was even the spark that lit Dr. Doan’s passion for dentistry, stemming from her sister’s education to her own summer volunteer work.

Dr. Doan first became interested in dentistry when she visited her sister while she was enrolled at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry.

Through these frequent visits, Dr. Doan watched her sister learn about dentistry through lab and clinical work. Dr. Doan was inspired meeting some of her sister’s professors and peers.

The Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC hosts the annual Dental Explorers two-week camp.

Additionally, Dr. Doan took part in a summer program called “The Dental Explorers”. The two-week summer camp hosted by the University of Southern California helped Dr. Doan fall in love with dentistry even more.

“I enjoyed the summer camp so much that right after I finished dental school, I became the director for the Dental Explorers Program and taught the summer class,” Dr. Doan said.

What’s happening now?

To no surprise, both themes of family and dentistry continue to be central in Dr. Doan’s life. Her family’s practice, A+ Family Dentistry, keeps improving and expanding.

Dr. Doan said the goal of the family practice is not success but rather accessibility.

“We want to help people, not just in Poway and San Diego, but everywhere. The way to do this was to open another office in Sorrento Valley to help the people there,” Dr. Janice Doan said.

A “Sports-Center” life

Dr. Betsy Carmack has been recognized as one of America’s Best Young Dentists, the 2019 Incisal Edge 40 Under 40 honorees. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her accomplishments. She and her husband Dr. Tyler Carmack run four dental offices in Bennington, Rutland and Shaftsbury, Vermont and carve out time for humanitarian outreach, family and other passions in life.

One that has always been central to Dr. Betsy Carmack’s life: Sports. Her childhood days were filled with everything from gymnastics, dance and cheer to basketball, softball, track and swimming.

However, as Betsy entered her teen years, she knew she could only focus on one or two sports. Ultimately, she made the choice to continue her cheerleading and gymnastic careers, and competed in both sports throughout all four years of high school.

Betsy continued her cheerleading career at the collegiate level when she attended Vanderbilt University to earn her undergraduate degree.

Academics win the race

Dental school brought about quite a change in Dr. Carmack’s life; as someone who was always involved in athletics, attending Tufts University School of Dental Medicine meant that she had to dedicate the majority of her focus on academics.

It wasn’t until 2010 that Dr. Carmack got involved in competitive athletics again. Having just moved to Connecticut and preparing for her upcoming wedding, she began to work with a trainer at a local gym.

It was there that she was introduced to head trainer Sherry Carature and several other women who were prepping for an upcoming fitness show.

Getting back into the game

Dr. Carmack was not only attracted to the idea of getting involved in a sport again but also the opportunity to bond and make some new friends, which she was able to do right away.

“I was immediately drawn to and inspired by Sherry and connected seamlessly with the other girls,” Dr. Carmack said.

After going through the group training, Dr. Carmack competed in her first fitness show, Fitness Atlantic, in April 2010.

Even though she did not place in the show, Dr. Carmack said that she cherished the experience because she made a ton of new friends and fell in love with the sport’s contagious energy.

Time off pays off

Dr. Carmack had to take some time off from bodybuilding and fitness shows once she and her husband, Dr. Tyler Carmack, welcomed their two children to the world. However, once they settled into their new roles as parents, Dr. Carmack was inspired to return to the sport once again. This time around the results were a bit different.

In 2014, Dr. Carmack re-entered the fitness competition world, and she was eligible to compete in the Master’s Division.

Being in this division allowed Dr. Carmack to compete against women who faced similar life situations and circumstances. Eager to compete once again, Dr. Carmack trained for and placed 4th in the Green Mountain Thaw, an all-natural bodybuilding competition hosted in Vermont.

Dr. Carmack returned to the Green Mountain Thaw in 2018, and all of her hard work paid off, earning her the 1st place spot in the Open Tall Division and the Overall Bikini Division.

These two victories meant that Dr. Carmack received a World Beauty Fashion and Fitness (WBFF) Pro Card, along with a spot to compete in the World’s Competition in Las Vegas that August.

To prepare for this competition, Dr. Carmack completed more advanced training than ever before. At the WBFF World’s competition, Dr. Carmack not only bonded with many other like-minded fitness women from all over the globe, but also had the honor of finishing 9th worldwide in her first Pro Fitness Show.

Training behind the scenes

As if the weightlifting didn’t seem challenging enough, Dr. Carmack also took several other steps to prepare for each of her competitions.

“In bodybuilding, half of the difficulty is training your body through weights and cardio, along with knowing your angles and poses. The other half is training your mind, self- discipline and determination.”

With such a tight schedule as a dentist, mother and humanitarian, Dr. Carmack acknowledged how difficult it is to stick to a diet when training. She often ate six meals a day, all of which consisted of vegetables, proteins, and carbs. On top of all of that, she drank a gallon of water a day, at minimum.

Goal-oriented and determined, Dr. Carmack used her objectives and desired results as the drive to keep her on track when her training challenged her. Overcoming obstacles like time constraints, energy shortages and doubt was easy once she pictured herself on stage competing.

By keeping her goals at the forefront of her mind, Dr. Carmack was able to shrink the troubling obstacles she faced, allowing her aspirations and dreams to shine through.

Life outside of the fitness world

At present, Dr. Carmack is taking time to focus on her family life and her career. She is currently receiving training on dental implants and advanced surgical techniques from the Misch International Implant Institute.

This fall, she’ll be sharing her insight as a featured guest panelist at the 7th annual Lucy Hobbs Project Celebration at The Blackstone in Chicago. Dr. Carmack will join 10 incredible speakers, including CNN’s Poppy Harlow at this celebration of women in dentistry. On the panel “Healthy Me,” Dr. Carmack and three other experts will discuss proven methods of staying in a positive headspace while working under stress. Tomorrow and Friday, June 6 and 7, Furman will be creating portraits of the Incisal Edge 40 Under 40 at The James NoMad in New York City for the 9th annual installment of the feature for the nation’s premier dental lifestyle magazine.

In 2011, Furman played an integral of the 40 Under 40 debut within the pages of the magazine and he’s returned on occasion to share his talents behind the lens.

For the first time, Incisal Edge dental lifestyle magazine expands its signature awards to include categories for General Dentists and Dental Specialists; the upcoming fall edition will spotlight 80 professionals from across the United States.
