7 months + 2 dentists with determination = 'Wow' factor in Minnesota.

Sometimes, the best motivation can be proving to yourself and others that you can accomplish a lofty goal.

For Dr. Krista Bauer, Dr. Kelly Stark, and Dr. Dietrich Lawrenz at Champlin Family Dental, this was one of many factors that inspired them to see their new construction in Minnesota through to the last stroke of calming green paint.

“We were motivated to go through with this build because people in our lives told us we couldn’t.”

Dr. Krista Bauer

A top priority in the planning: space, space, and more space. The result of their vision: 7,000 square feet of excellence and multi-discipline for their patients, administrative and clinical teams, as well as room for storage and practice growth. The new construction, completed in seven months, allowed them to accomodate a new neighbor — an orthodontist tenant.

How it all began…

In 2017, Drs. Bauer and Stark, former dental-school students at the University of Minnesota, decided to join forces and create a shared practice. A Benco Build Your Future Workshop, conducted by dentist/designer Dr. Tristan Hamilton, helped the duo’s ideas coalesce.

“Eric Meiners brought us to the seminar and it was perfect for us,” said Dr. Stark of their Friendly Benco Rep.

“Our major vision was to have universal rooms set up with high-speed handpieces, Cavitrons, X-ray units, everything,” Dr. Bauer told Incisal Edge magazine in an interview earlier this year.
“The women speaking at the workshop told us that our rooms needed to be universal, and they solidified what we wanted but couldn’t execute.”

(Starting a Pinterest board of their ideas from the workshop gave them a central repository for design inspiration as well.)

They sought a refined, calming atmosphere that delivered “wow” factor but not in an “over the top” way.

Green: a color of calm.

To match their logo and achieve a calming vibe, the decided on neutral palette with green accents throughout the practice.

One of her favorite moments Dr. Stark recalls, was seeing the Champlin Dental team’s reaction to the finished office after the completion of the seven-month process.

“Once the office was finished, we let them in one by one and took pictures of them seeing it for the first time.”

Dr. Kelly Stark

Their reception area, chandelier, color scheme and space (12 rooms!) receive the most positive commentary from their patients and staff, says Dr. Stark.

The doctors offer advice on the construction or renovation of a dental practice:

“Find the right team — from architect, to contractor, to banker, and real estate agent. Trust your team!”

Spring refresh at your dental practice? Fill your vision board with these #designtrends.

Art Deco, Scandinavian, Bohemian, and Mid-Century Modern — styles ideal for home … or home away from home (better known as your dental practice).

The bonus: each can help bring vibrance and showcase the personality of your practice.

Do bold colors, smooth lines, and geometric shapes inspire you? Check out Art Deco design styles.

Art Deco, short for Arts Décoratifs, can be characterized by rich colors, bold geometry, and decadent details. A trend popularized during the roaring 1920s can incorporate glitz, glamour, and bold designs into your dental practice a century later.

Art Deco interior design

Add Art Deco into the dental practice today, with an accent piece, or an entire room. Where to begin?

  • Geometric shapes.
  • Animal prints.
  • Glamorous lighting and fixtures.
  • Statement mirrors.
  • Abstract ceiling designs.

Luxury styles of the Great Gatsby era are some of the most popular trends today.

Prefer simplicity? Scandinavian designs deliver.

First gaining attention around the 1950s, the Scandinavian interior design style is known for its functionality, minimalism and simplicity. Expect clean cuts, natural shapes and materials, along with a touch of abstraction.

Scandinavian interior design.

Want to incorporate aspects of Scandinavian design within your practice? It’s simple.

  • Warm textiles.
  • Combinations of natural materials ( think: wood and metal).
  • Neutral colors.
  • Fresh plants and flowers.

Scandinavian style advantage for the dental practice: a clutter free workspace. For a minimalist looking to scale back, Scandinavian the ideal match.

Ready to relax your spirit and practice vibe? Bohemian design speaks your language.

“The word ‘bohemian’ refers to someone socially unconventional and often involved in the arts, making it a great interior design option for a rich and heady space full of visual interest and a relaxed spirit.”

Decoraid.com

‘Boho’ was founded by free-spirited people in the early 19th century and incorporated many cultures from all over the globe.

Bohemian interior design

Bring on the Bohemian style.

  • Simple base.
  • A play on patterns.
  • Distressed items.
  • Bright colors and metallics.
  • Layers.

Less is more definitely does not apply to Bohemian design. Looking to make a bright and exuberant practice? Bet on Boho.

Seeking functional and timeless appeal? Incorporate Mid-century Modern design styles at your practice.

In the late 1940s, after the end of WWII, mid-century modern design style evolved. Today it delights with its vintage vibe.

Mid-century modern designs use natural elements like wood beams and brick walls, then tie in a modern twist.

Mid-century modern interior design

Ready for retro? Lava lamps need not apply.

  • Vibrant colors (think: sage, orange, turquoise).
  • Modern textiles.
  • Vintage window treatments.
  • Low-lying furniture.
  • Abstract patterns.

Mid-century modern styles appeal with simple, clean and elegant aspects, and unique accents.

Personal tragedy inspires Dr. Katie McCann Lee to restore smiles. #IE40under40

At a very young age, Dr. Katie McCann Lee learned the importance of a smile to one’s well being. At only the age of 14 she was involved in a horrific ATV accident.

This accident left her with a severely fractured face and missing teeth. Four years and nine reconstructive surgeries later, doctors were able to restore her smile.

“I had to go through four years of high school without front teeth, and that negatively affected my confidence and social development. I learned at a young age how important a smile is to one’s well being. I wanted to enhance other people’s well-being by being a dentist.”

Dr. Katie McCann Lee

Many of Dr. McCann Lee’s patients don’t know about the life-changing experience that led her to dentistry

Dr. McCann Lee, one of the Incisal Edge 2019 40 Under 40 honorees, recalls those difficult days.

As a result of the accident, her right Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) was severely damaged and to repair the function of this joint, doctors used her rib bone.

The biggest challenge to overcome in her life this far, Dr. McCann Lee says, was not only the horrific accident, but the fact that it occured at a difficult time in her life.

“I also had to face tough bullying at school for the way that I looked from my accident and subsequent surgeries. At a young age, I was tested, and learned discipline and persistence. Luckily, that has carried throughout my adult life, so nothing seems out of reach anymore.”

Dr. Katie McCann Lee

Those challenges culminated in Dr. McCann Lee’s passion for dentistry and ultimately, her decision to create Aurora Modern Dentistry in Colorado.

Dr. Katie McCann Lee surrounded by the supportive dental team at Aurora Modern Dentistry.

“I believe that dentistry should be affordable, be efficiently delivered, and tailored to the patient’s lifestyle.”

Dr. Katie McCann Lee

Education is just the first step to the dental profession, and in order to be successful, that training needs to extend outside of the classroom to the patients.

At Dr. McCann Lee’s practice she initiated a ‘co-treatment plan’ which allows the patients to select the treatment plan of their choice. Within this process, she and her team inform the patients of the diagnosis and present all possible solutions. The patients are invited to select the one that will work best for their lifestyle.

The primary goal for Dr. McCann Lee and her team is to find and treat the source of the problem, not just the symptoms. They focus on issues such as chronic inflammation, sleep disturbances, occlusal discrepancies, and infection.

Dr. McCann Lee often sees patients on weekends, to accommodate their busy lives.

A passion for innovation.

Currently, Dr. McCann Lee is particularly passionate about the topic of salivary diagnostics, in which saliva is tested for inflammatory genes and oral bacteria. This allows a doctor to better diagnose and manage periodontics and chronic inflammation.

Her expertise in sleep and airway management allows her to provide treatment to improve the quality of a patient’s life, and systemic conditions such as sleep apnea.

This summer, Aurora Modern Dentistry will expand their office with a build out of a specialty center, to incorporate endodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, and sleep medicine.

Dr. McCann Lee has been an inspiration to many. Who inspires her?

Dr. Minh Pham is an experienced clinician with tremendous success in building practices and training dentists. Dr. McCann Lee credits him as her mentor.

“He has taught me how to stay humble and hungry, to always work hard, and to always put my team first.”

Dr. Katie McCann Lee

The most important lesson Dr. McCann Lee says she learned from Dr. Pham: No matter what, you should always focus on your team first. A dental practice is never one-person; the team helps the doctor create solutions and ideas.

Dr. Katie McCann Lee spends her free time traveling with the with friends and family. She is always up for a good adventure, or a scuba diving session!

Butterfly? Magical mentor? Benco Tooth Fairy illuminates preschoolers #NationalToothFairyDay

As the Benco Tooth Fairy took flight after a visit with the Illumination Early Learning Center in Kingston, Pennsylvania, Macklan, one pre-school student asked, “Where did that butterfly go?”

Pat Motyka, a 10-year associate at the nation’s largest independently owned dental distributor, delivers smiles to youngsters throughout the year, but there’s no better time to share a tale of her recent adventures than today — #National Tooth Fairy Day.

Unless it’s during a visit to the dentist, people rarely volunteer details on their toothbrush and floss habits. Not the case with this pre-school class. Sixteen students were more than willing to express their enthusiasm for dental hygiene, as well as a love and admiration for the Benco Dental Tooth Fairy.

Resplendent in white attire and a glittering crown and wings, Pat Motyka, a Tooth Customer Service Specialist at the dental distributor’s home office in Pittston, entered the preschool classroom for a visit last fall.

“Visitors absolutely help the classroom. I think sometimes when the message is conveyed by another person (not the teacher or parent) they truly take it to heart. “

Elizabeth Muller, a teacher at Illumination Early Learning Center

Students intently listened and watched as the Tooth Fairy spoke on the importance of brushing and flossing, and handed out cartoon coloring sheets with a little magical help from Benco Associate Debby Wargo. Her audience jumped to the task when she offered a hands-on experience brushing the teeth of Finn, a plush shark puppet used for dental hygiene demos (shown at top).

Students coloring at Illumination Early Learning Center

Teacher Amy Wall reminisced about her childhood experience with a loose tooth.

“When I was little, I didn’t want to eat an apple because my tooth was loose and wiggly. So I would only eat mashed potatoes and jelly. One day at school I forgot and ate the apple. My tooth was stuck in it and I didn’t even realize it came out. I was a little bit petrified.”

Amy Wall a teacher at Illumination Learning Center

Students rushed to impress Tooth Fairy Pat with their brush and floss routines. An excited young boy raised his hand to explain that his Mommy always tells him to floss his teeth.

Wall said even before the Tooth Fairy arrived, students were excited and trying to guess what she would wear, some asking: “Do you think she’ll have wings?”

Before the Tooth Fairy made her exit for the journey back to Benco, she gifted each child with a take-home package, including a dental kit, stickers and other surprises.

Though new to the Tooth Fairy role, with just a few classroom visits under her wings, Motyka brings 10 years of dental industry experience to her position at Benco Dental.

Benco Tooth Fairy Pat Motyka with students at Illumination Early Learning Center in Kingston, Pennsylvania.

Along with being seen as a role model for many of the children and adding some sparkle to their day, she feels her visits always make an impact.

“A lot of parents don’t tell their kids about dental health — I know mine didn’t. I think it’s important, because that’s the first thing you see when you talk to someone: their teeth. Benco was kind enough to donate tooth gel, toothbrushes, and brushing charts for the dental kit, which will help them.”

How the dental practice can optimize the 2020 Colors of the Year.

A fresh coat of paint can offer a new outlook. But where to begin?

Use the “Color of the Year” selected by Sherwin-Williams (Naval SW 6244) and Benjamin Moore (First Light 2102-70) as starting points at your dental practice.

“Both colors foreshadow a shift in Interior Design trends from cool, gray neutrals to more welcoming, colorful interior spaces.  Pair either paint color with white and gold accents for an updated Art Deco look – a trend that is gaining popularity.  Or use both colors together to create a classic color palette!”

Megan Chuzas, Interior Designer with Benco Dental CenterPoint Design.

Anchors aweigh with calming Naval

Sherwin-Williams describes their 2020 “Color of the Year, Naval SW 6244, as a rich navy that creates a calm and grounding environment infused with quiet confidence. And, according to the paint experts, “While you may think navy’s been done before – it’s never been done like this.”

Looking beyond the blue, this color is known to offer “infinite calmness and inspiration” whether it is used for the whole room, or just an accent piece.

According to Sherwin-Williams.com “Gold metallic accents and paint colors such as Tarnished Trumpet SW 9026 or Midday SW 6695 bring warmth to navy’s boldness for a pairing that’s meant to be, while shades of green and paint colors such as Kale Green SW 6460 introduce biophilia for a grounding, down-to-earth presence.”

The First Light for a ‘bright new decade’

“A fresh palette. A revitalized spirit. A soft, rosy hue blooming with potential.” Benjamin Moore describes their Color of the Year 2020, First Light 2102-70, as “the backdrop for a bright new decade”.

Benjamin Moore’s First Light offers a mixture between both warm and cool color components, which makes it easy to pair. It can be matched with a warm chocolate brown and light mauve, or a light taupe with a cool brown.

“Let’s use color to express ourselves, be a little more upbeat, and happy,” says Hannah Yeo, Color & Design Manager at Benjamin Moore & Co. “We all need that optimism in our lives.”
