Let’s talk about dentin.

Whether providing outstanding adhesion to dentin or creating an all-in-one dentin substitute, Septodont is delivering innovation. Two unique products stand out in the recent offerings: a root canal sealer, BioRoot™ RCS Mineral-based RC Sealer, and an all-in-one dentin substitute, Biodentine.

BioRoot RCS from Septodont. Bioactive mineral root canal sealer.
BioRoot RCS from Septodont, bioactive mineral root canal sealer.

Got a tooth in trouble? This outstanding adhesive seals the solution.

BioRoot™ RCS Mineral-based RC Sealer, created from pure calcium silicate, is monomer-free, which ensures zero shrinkage.

How does it present a tight seal with single cone obturation? Outstanding adhesion to dentin and gutta-percha points. BioRoot continues the sealing process in the presence of moisture.

A convenient hand-mix presentation offers a few additional benefits:
•• Full control of the final viscosity
•• Reduced risk of cross contamination compared to in-mouth inserted syringes
•• Less material waste through hand dosage of powder.

One material, seven uses.

Biodentine, an all-in-one dentin substitute can be used for a base/liner, direct and indirect pulp capping, pulpotomies (under stainless steel crowns), root perforations and apical surgeries.

Made from the highest purity mineral, it offers versatility and excellent sealing properties. It acts quickly (sets in 10-12 minutes) so that full restorations can be completed in one office visit.

It does not stain, offers excellent radiopacity, and eliminates surface preparation and the bonding required due to the micro-mechanical anchorage.

How does it save teeth? Biodentine features a higher compressive strength than dentin, it preserves pulp, and promotes pulp healing, which in most cases eliminates root canal therapy.

Dr. Arash Hakhamian’s dental app delivers care at a hospital room, home — even poolside #IE40Under40

Searching for a more relaxed atmosphere for oral health care with vetted expert dentists? Dentulu offers fully mobile dental units that can pop up in any standard 10 by 10 room, where an electrical outlet is the only necessity for the Dentulu team. This includes the living room, bedroom, hospital room, senior living center, or even poolside (shown at top).

“I have been performing mobile dental services for the rich and famous here in Beverly Hills for almost a decade and an excited about providing access to this incredible service for all Americans alike,” said Dr. Arash Hakhamian, founder and CEO of Dentulu.

Meet the founder, CEO of Dentulu

Dr. Arash Hakhamian, chosen as one of the 2018 Incisal Edge 40 Under 40 award winners, is the founder and CEO of Dentulu, Dentistry on Demand, platform. According to Dr. Hakhamian, Dentulu is the world’s first and only on demand mobile app that allows patients anywhere in the United States to connect to a dentist, on demand and from the comfort of their own home, within a few minutes. Dentulu’s multiple features allow for increased access to dentists both virtually and through mobile dentists who are able to provide dental care in the comfort of the patient’s home or workplace.

“My hope and dream for the future of dentistry is to bring our profession up to date with the technological advancements we currently see in other sectors. The Uberization of different sectors has helped give the user more control of their experience and Dentistry has unfortunately lagged behind other fields.

The public can now schedule doctors, haircuts, massages and a myriad of other services to their home and there is no reason basic dental services should not be available as well.”

Dr. Arash Hakhamian, founder and CEO of Dentulu, Dentistry on Demand platform
Dr. Arash Hakhamian worked with companies, including Google, to set up the Dentulu platform.

Need to connect with a licensed dentist within 5 minutes?

With the help of recent legislation that has passed by Congress and the American Dental Association, Dentulu is now able to bridge the access to dental care for millions of Americans through the use of mobile and teledentistry.

“Patients who are having an emergency no longer have to take a trip to the Urgent Care or Emergency Department to address their concerns, only to wait for hours and sometimes walk away with opioids and recommendations to find a dentist. Patients can now simply download the Dentulu app and connect with a licensed dentist within five minutes and receive immediate care through a real time virtual consultation and have a prescription sent to a pharmacy and simultaneously connect with a dentist that can see them in his or her dental office.”

Dr. Arash Hakhamian, founder and CEO of Dentulu, Dentistry on Demand platform

This service is not only for emergencies. Patients who are interested in a consultation or a second opinion on various treatments such as cosmetic dentistry, braces, implants or wisdom teeth can also schedule a virtual consultation from the comfort of their own home with a trained dental expert for less than $10. The patient simply picks the type of dental professional they want to consult with on the Dentulu Network and can schedule a 10 minute consultation to meet and doctor and have all of their questions answered before making a trip to the dental office.

Dentulu also provides mobile dental services to almost any location of the patients choosing. Busy patients along with elderly or disabled patients no longer have to waste hours of time and deal with the logistic nightmares of sitting in traffic or the waiting room for simple checkups and cleanings. By downloading the Dentulu application, patients are able to schedule basic cleanings, whitenings, Invisalign and other basic dental services to their home or workplace, saving them time and money, with or without the use of dental insurance.

This service has been proven to save patients time and also provide a comfortable and relaxed environment where the patient and family can get individualized and person attention with vetted expert dentists in their area.

“I have helped implement the protocols for proper infection control and logistics in providing mobile dental care for various organizations including NGO’s in third world countries, where access to dental care is limited.”

Dr. Arash Hakhamian, founder and CEO of Dentulu, Dentistry on Demand platform

According to Dr. Hakhamian, Dentulu also provides numerous features including: Virtual Reality (VR) glasses, aromatherapy, and audio/visual software that patients can utilize to improve the user experience. By changing the environment of the dental services, Dentulu provides an opportunity to reduce the anxiety and fear of the dental office and enhances the patients comfort during dental procedures.

Dr. Jason Auerbach’s advice for dental practice design: Be who you are.

Dr. Jason Auerbach, founder of Riverside Oral Surgery, Official Oral Surgeons of the New Jersey Devils, has turned his vision into the premier practice in Northern New Jersey.

Being an oral surgeon for a National Hockey League team would seem to be a ticket to professional prosperity. For Dr. Jason Auerbach, one of the tooth docs for the New Jersey Devils, that notion is bolstered by his newest elegant facility in the town of Englewood, just across the Hudson River from Upper Manhattan.

Riverside Oral Surgery, which Dr. Auerbach — a member of the Incisal Edge 40 Under 40 in 2014 — founded a dozen years ago, now comprises five oral surgeons and four offices throughout the region. His design sensibility has progressed in that time as well.

“When I built my first practice in River Edge, the focus was on re-creating something of a boutique hotel experience,” he says. “Patients come in anxious, and they need a certain level of comfort. We did that with colors and textures. It was relaxed and tranquil—almost spa-like.”

Dr. Jason Auerbach
Dr. Jason Auerbach discusses the style elements featured at one of his four New Jersey dental offices. “Concrete, metals, harder angles, grays and whites—but still comfortable enough that patients don’t feel they’re in a stark environment.”
(Photography courtesy ARI BURLING)

The current fashion in medical practice aesthetics, he observes, is sterility. “Still, you don’t want to lose that comfort.” He looked to model the newest offices after the style of trendy New York lofts: “Concrete, metals, harder angles, grays and whites—but still comfortable enough that patients don’t feel they’re in a stark environment.”

Looking for a design tip?

Dr. Auerbach’s got several here and more to share in the summer edition of Incisal Edge dental lifestyle magazine: https://www.incisaledgemagazine.com/mag/article/the-puck-stops-here/

“Attention to detail is everything. I’m attuned to what I would want. Sit in a chair, sit in the recovery room, understand what the patient is seeing. Get a sense of the rooms from the patient’s perspective. Be who you are, and you’ll attract the patients who belong with you. Your truth will come through. You gotta be you.”

Meet the Author of ‘Dentistry That Doesn’t Bite’: Dr. Michael Carpenter

Ohio dentist Dr. Michael Carpenter recently found time to author a book distilling his two decades of experience in practicing patient-focused dentistry. It’s called “Dentistry That Doesn’t Bite: Changing The Way You Think About Dentistry” and it has a five-star rating on Amazon.

It’s easy to see why Dr. Michael Carpenter wasn’t lured away to the big city. The heart of Napoleon, Ohio is a pretty, tree-lined main drag dotted with shops, cafes and offices. All around it, there’s street after street of perfectly restored old homes and vivid green lawns that, come fall, sprout handmade “Go Cats!” signs in support of the Napoleon High School Wildcats. Just outside of town are sprawling family farms with cornfields that seemingly go for miles. The air is fresh, traffic nonexistent, and overall, it’s pretty close to Hollywood’s silver screen ideal of Small Town, USA.

Dr. Michael Carpenter’s dental practice in Napoleon, Ohio.

Napoleon is roughly 45 miles from Toledo, Ohio and 60 from Fort Wayne, Indiana—just far enough to be rural, but still an easy commute to bigger cities if patients really want to. Dr. Carpenter is keenly aware of that fact, and has created a practice that provides a cosmopolitan atmosphere and fully modern capabilities you wouldn’t automatically expect in a town of less than 9,000 residents. As a result, he draws patients from miles around and is growing every month. The pace is so brisk that he recently opened a second office in the nearby town of Delta.

Learn the secrets of Dr. Carpenter’s success in an interview with Incisal Edge Associate Editor Ed Kobesky, in the dental lifestyle magazine’s summer edition: https://www.incisaledgemagazine.com/mag/article/napoleon-dynamite/

Healthy GLO

Dr. Jonathan B. Levine, Stacey Levine AND their sons, Julian and Cody (shown) —with an assist from rocker Lenny Kravitz (shown) —bring free dental care and education to the Bahamas.

Giving back was always in GLO Science’s DNA. Founded seven years ago by inventor, professor and prosthodontist Dr. Jonathan Levine and his wife, Stacey, the company burst out of the gate with dental health and technology products that won consumer admiration and four Edison Awards. The couple launched the GLO Good Foundation around the same time, dedicating a portion of the business’s profits to philanthropy.

Ed Kobesky, Incisal Edge dental lifestyle magazine Associate Editor

In the magazine’s summer editions, Kobesky interviews Stacey Levine and Grammy Award-winning musician Kravitz about the foundation’s work in Eleuthera, including a small clinic they launched in 2015 to deliver community health and dental care.

Giving back Twice

Julian and Cody partnered with Kravitz to create Twice, a new-age oral-care brand making better-for-you toothpaste for morning and night. Twice donated 700 tubes of toothpaste for the most recent Bahamas mission; 10 percent of profits go to the GLO Good Foundation.

How to buy a dental chair: Start with 3 simple questions.

Want to be sure you select the right chair for your dental office?

The needs of every dental office and its patients vary. Sure, some general guidelines may stretch across the entire profession of dentistry, but when it comes down to it, what does your chair need to be capable of to suit you and your patients?

The process of buying a dental chair is simple when it’s broken down into three categories: function, fabric and color.

Fusion Package from Forest Dental, shown, features a patient chair with flip-down armrests that make it easy for your patients to get in and out.
  1. Function. What do you need your chair to do?
How intricate do you want the controls to be? The Midmark UltraComfort Dental Chair (shown at top) offers four programmable presets to create effortless placement of both the patient and the chair. Do you need it to recline a little or a lot? How much do you need it to raise or lower? How accessible does it need to be? The Fusion Package from Forest Dental, shown above, features a patient chair with flip-down armrests that make it easy for your patients to get in and out. Backrest — narrow or wide? Select a chair that can do all that you need it to.
DCI Edge Series 5 Chair, shown, offers four layers of memory foam to ensure patients are always comfortable.

2. Fabric. What makes your patients the most comfortable?
From Ultraleather to pearlized or nauga soft upholstery, the material of your chair matters. A chair with memory foam like the DCI Edge Series 5 Chair (shown above) offers four layers of memory foam to ensure patients are at ease. Also, select a fabric that remains clean with everyday use.

The 1800 Spirit Dental Chair from Pelton & Crane, shown, is available in 37 color options.

3. Color. How can a chair complement your color scheme? Match your dental chair to the rest of your equipment, finishes and overall style. The 1800 Spirit Dental Chair from Pelton & Crane (shown above) is available in 37 color options. The color of your chair should not only match the office but should also balance it.

How does Benco make selecting a dental chair easy?

It’s Friday. Sweet! Incisal Edge offers a recipe for an island splash.

Martinique’s most treasured export, rhum agricole is a far cry from all those Bacardi-and-Cokes of your bygone youth.

Spirits columnist for Incisal Edge dental lifestyle magazine, Lauren Mowery, offers a review of this international treasure, made from freshly crushed sugarcane juice.

If an island respite from your dental practice this summer isn’t in the cards, though, you can always replicate Martinique’s local cocktail, called Ti’ Punch, at home. No recipe required: Just pour a splash of one of these rhums in a glass. Squeeze in lime. Add sugar — not too much; you’re a dentist, after all — and swirl.

This #StudenttoWatch has traveled to his dental destiny

Born into war-wracked Somalia and a refugee for years, Muktar Farah is now on the cusp of a remarkable dental career in Minnesota.

Dr. Farah shared his inspirational path to dentistry with Incisal Edge in the dental lifestyle magazine’s summer edition.

I WAS BORN in Somalia in 1991 at the beginning of the civil war. My family was displaced, and we weren’t in a position to fly out, so we fled the country on foot. We spent the first 10 years of my life in refugee camps in northeastern Kenya.

Around 1999 or 2000, we finally made it to Nairobi and had some stability. I started my schooling there.  My mom valued education, so I was homeschooled and had some foundation, but I was still behind. In 2008, I completed my high school education in Nairobi.

Muktar Farah, recent graduate of Doctor of Dental Surgery program at the University of Minnesota

Through a refugee program, in 2009 Muktar Farah gained an opportunity to come to the U.S. Helpful advice from relatives who attended the University of Minnesota, a summer dental program there and a love for biology led him to dental school.

Minnesota was the first state to take Somali refugees two or three decades ago. Once you come, you don’t want to leave. The people are nice. It’s important to me that my story resonate with people, but I also want to show my appreciation to the state.
