2016: already a banner year for oral health.

It’s only January 27 and the world of dentistry is awash in good news.

From headline news in the LA Times about a smokeless tobacco ban at Dodger Stadium, and a Mouthing Off blog post about the American Student Dental Association’s February Wellness Challenge, to social media blasts about the Institute of Oral Health’s Inaugural In Motion: 5K Run, Walk, Fun, 2016 is a banner year thus far.

ORAL HEALTH HOME RUN

I’m sure some are so mad they can spit, but Hector Becerra shared good news for many in his report that the L.A. city council voted 14-1 Tuesday morning to approve an ordinance banning the use of smokeless tobacco products at all baseball fields and other sports venues in the city.
“It is our great hope that this leads to other cities, Major League Baseball and the great players we all admire to follow suit and do what is right for the health of the players, fans and the good of the game,” Council person Luis Huizar said after Tuesday’s vote.
According to Becerra’s story, Boston and San Francisco have already outlawed smokeless tobacco from their professional baseball stadiums.

UP FOR A CHALLENGE?
If you think your hectic schedule only allows for ordering in and terrible-for-your-total- fitness-plan takeout options, think again.

Digital Content Coordinator Kerri Richardson at Mouthing Off offered firsthand feedback (recipes and helpful tips, too) after participating in one of the ASDA’s monthly wellness challenges #BeWellASDA:

“Eat only home cooked meals for seven days. I completed the challenge for this blog post and it was extremely difficult, but rewarding.”

According to asdanet.org, the challenges “ask you to change your behavior in a way that will positively affect your wellness … [and] target one (or more) of ASDA’s five dimensions of wellness: emotional, physical, intellectual, occupational and environmental.”

DON’T RUN? AHDA HOPES YOU’LL STILL DONATE.
During its 93rd annual session, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association hopes see the forward motion of a new initiative.
A fundraising effort that will benefit the ADHA Institute for Oral Health, which provides thousands of dollars each year to advance the profession of dental hygiene through scholarship, research and service will culminate Thursday, June 9 in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with an inaugural event.
From now until then, those interested are invited to create teams to participate or make a donation to support the IN MOTION 5K RUN WALK FUN
